Palm Springs is a small city at the foot San Jacinto Peak,  one of southern California’s most majestic mountains.   For the past 300 to 500 years  desert area was home to the Agua Caliente band of Cahuilla Indians. But more than 2000 years again these first residents moved into the desert.  Much of tribal life was centered about the lush vegetation and abundant water in the area knows and Indian Canyons, site of North America’s largest natural fan palm oases.  The Agua Caliente Reservation, established in 1896 32,000 acres.  6700 acres lie with the city limits.  Their reservation land was originally laid out in alternating squares across the desert.  The alternating, non reservation squares were given to Southern Pacific Railroad to open up travel.

The first non Indian settler was Judge John Guthrie McCallum from San Francisco with his family seeking health for his tubercular son.  He purchase land from Southern pacific and build an elaborate aqueduct.

Visitors and non Indian residents continued to come in but only the Equalization Law of 1959 allowed the tribes to realize profits from their lands.  In 1909 Nellie Coffman’s Desert Inn opened and a garage to service the increasing numbers of vehicles coming to the area.  By 1938 Palm Springs was world famous as a winter resort an playground for the Hollywood stars.  European royalty came to enjoy the endless sunshine.

During World War II the desert hosted training grounds for Patton’s troops as they prepared to invade North Africa.

There was tremendous growth in the post war era as the little town in the desert became knows world wide.

Known for diversity in dining, the Village of Palm Springs offers hundreds of restaurant.  The acclaimed revue of the Fabulous Palm Springs follies and the McCallum Theatre for the Performing Arts in Palm Desert fill the evenings with world class entertainment.

Sight seeing is an important attraction.  The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway boats the largest rotating tram car system in the world.  This is a breathtaking ascent for two and  one half miles from the desert floor to more than 8500 feet.  The temperature drops nearly 30 degrees during the ascent.  The panoramic views of the desert are unforgettable.  There is a wilderness area at the top and a restaurant with the most spectacular views.
Primitive camping and hiking and guided nature walks are a wonderful way to learn about the natural environment at the Top of the Tram. There is no charge for this one of a kind experience. Cross country skiing in this challenging terrain is exciting there are equipment rents or you can bring your own.  People for all ages enjoy sledding and snowshoeing into the back country round out the winter experience.  A permit is needed for anyone venturing outside Long Canyon.  Snow Camping is also offered by special permit.

The International Film Festival features red carpet events with movie stars in attendance.  One of the last authentic vaudeville show  still l presented in the nation happens at the Pam springs Follies stage show.  This features only performers over 55 years of age.  Village Fest is held every Thursday evening and features a certified farmer’s market, crafts, food and live entertainment.

The Palm Springs Art Museum offers traveling are exhibitions and a variety of entertainment.  The Caliente band of Indians has added excitement to downtown with the luxurious Spa Resort Horal and Casino.

The Moorten Botanical Garden and Cactarium showcases the beautiful vegetation of this hot and dry world.  The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens and the George S Patton Memorial Museum add variety to the attraction for the desert area.

The largest Gay and Lesbian community in the US is located here.  In fact the current gay and lesbian population Palm Springs is estimated to be about seven times the national average  In 1995 the city elected an openly gay city council member, Ron Oden, a progressive African American.  In 2003 he was elected mayor and still hold that post.  There are over 35 openly gay resort hotels and the annual Gay Pride Parade and Festival is held the first weekend in November.  In recent years is has attracted more than 35,00 spectators who line Palm Canyon Drive for the event. There is great beauty and peace in the desert looking up to the snowcapped mountain peaks.  With so many activities an points of interest Palm Springs attracts the attention of international travelers and those who wish to retire in a most unusual and attractive resort area.

Mid century architecture is part of the sophistication and historic significance of Palm Springs grew out of the aesthetic of the world renowned German Bauhaus and is reflected in the work of Albert Frey who designed the Palm Springs city hall, tram, station, Movie colony Hotel and airport.  A home developer, Alexander Homes popularized this post and beam  style in the Coachella Valley.  Alexander houses and similar homes are much sought after and feature low pitched roofs. Wide eaves, open beamed ceilings, and floor to ceiling windows to create  an indoor/outdoor ambience suitable for private, poolside living in a desert climate. Restoration projects  are now underway to return homes and businesses to original condition.  Students of mid century architecture come to the city to study this heritage in the unusual style of decorative arts.

The Palm Springs Power /California league baseball team is composed of college all stars playing the Palm Springs Stadium  There are a number of sporting events including the Pacific Life Open, a world renowned tennis event, dozens of boxing events.  Palm Springs has hosted the Easter Bowl the national junior tennis championships, and several NCAA golf tournaments.

The Nortel Palm Springs International Film Festival features the best of Euopa cinema with more than 100 international entrants.  The riverside county Fair and National Date Festival features  the Arabian Nights Pageants and camel races, carnival rides, games, live entertainment and a parade.  Te Blessing of the Dates Ceremony and contests.

The Frank Sinatra Invitational Tournament is special as four amateurs are teamed with celebrities from film, music, sports, and business in this fundraiser for the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center at Eisenhower Medical Center.
