Orlando, Florida, the City Beautiful is best knows for the many tourists attractions in the area.  The Walt Disney World Resort is the primary and best known but Sea World and Universal Orlando Resort help attracted nearly 52 million tourists a year.  After Las Vegas Orlando has the second largest number of hotel room in the country.  It is one of the busiest American cities for conferences and conventions with the Orange County Convention Center, the country’s second largest in square footage.  There is a wide array of golf courses many of which are available for any level of golfer.  Although it is as much as 20 miles from the major attractions downtown Orlando is undergoing major redevelopment.

It is recently announced that there will be a new performing arts center, Orlando Arena, and the Citrus Bowl will be restored. The settlement of Jernigan was named after the first permanent settler in the area.  It had previously been known as “Orlando’s grave” in memory of a soldier named Orlando Reeves who allegedly dies in the area during the war against he Seminole Indian tribe.

The Reconstruction Era following the Civil War brought a population explosion which led to the city’s incorporation in 1875.           For the next 20 years Orlando became the hub of Florida’s citrus industry.  This was known as Orlando’s “Golden Era”.  The great freeze of 1894-1895 forced many growers out of their independent groves and into consolidated the holdings in the hands of a few.

During the years between the Spanish American War and World War 1 Orlando was Florida’s largest inland city and it became a popular resort.  The cit was also host to several sanitariums, which serves as the basis for it hospitals today.

Land prices soared in the 1920 as a result of a large housing boom.  During this period several neighborhoods in downtown were built leaving behind many bungalows.  The hurricanes in the late 20s and the depression ended the boom.

Pine Castle AAF was home to a number of Army personnel during World War II and some of them stayed in Orland to settle and raise families.  The Martin Marietta (now Lockheed Martin) plant was built there in 1956.  Orland is close enough to Patrick Air Force Base, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, and Kennedy Space Center for residents to commute to work from the suburbs.  Port Canaveral is an important cruise ship terminal.  Due to this proximity to the “Space Coast” many high-tech companies have shifted to the Orlando area…

In 1965 Walt Disney announced plans to build Walt Disney world.  He had considered Miami and Tampa for his park, but he reasoned that Orlando’s inland location, although no free from hurricanes, would not expose it to and increased threat.  The park opened in 1971 and brought an explosive growth in population and economy.  Tourism has helped Orlando gain top ranking as a vacation destination.

The warm and humid subtropical climate creates two major seasons in the year.  From May to October it is hot and rainy.  November through March is cooler and brings more moderate temperatures.

The city has a large Puerto Rican, Colombian, Venezuelan, Haitian, French, Brazilian, Canadian, German, Arab, Indian, and Vietnamese communities as well as a growing number of Russian and British residents. Crime in Orlando has been up 329% since 2006.  Based on the Morgan Quitno Press 2006 national crime rankings Orlando ranked #1 in Florida and #25 in the nation.

The rapidly growing Puerto Rican community is reflected in the abundance of Hispanic themed restaurants and radio stations.  Spanish language music such as Reggaeton is common on Orlando radio stations and the Orlando Magic Basketball team is the only team in the NBA to have a Latin Night.  The Orlando-Central Florida area is home to the most affluent Puerto Rican families in the United States.  Many Puerto Ricans have relocated to the Kissimmee area.  The short distance from Orlando to Puerto Rico, similar climate and job opportunities have attracted many Puerto Ricans to immigrate to Kissimmee.  The town has even larger African American populations as it is only six miles from the first all black town to be incorporated in the United State, Eatonville, Florida.

“Little Saigon” in the Colonial town district of Orlando is a landmark and has an always growing number of restaurants, groceries and merchants selling merchandise from across Asia.  This community has its roots in war refugees seeking a new life in America after the fall of Saigon.

Hip hop music, metal, rock Reggaeton and Latino music scenes are all active within the city.

Orlando is also known as Hollywood East.  There are numerous cinematic enterprises and the Florida Film Festival in nearby Maitland is one of the most respected regional film festivals in the country.

In addition to the Walt Disney World Resort Orlando hosts the Universal Orlando Resort, and Sea World Orlando.  Disney’s Magic Kingdom, Epcot Center, and all of its many facets draws the majority of visitors but Sea World Orlando feature numerous zoological displays and a large adventure park that features marine animals alongside roller coasters.  Universal Orlando is a multifaceted resort comprising Universal Studios, City Walk and the Islands of Adventure theme park.

For nature lovers the Blue Spring State park is the winter home of large numbers of Florida manatees that come upstream from the St Johns River to swim in the warm waters.  The Central Florida Zoological Park is a 100 acre zoo and houses a butterfly garden, herpetqrium, and numerous tropical animals.  Discovery Cove, a part of the Sea World complex featuring tropical fish in a coral reef, snorkeling with stingrays, and interacting with birds in an aviary as well as swimming and playing with dolphins…  Gatorland houses thousands of alligators and crocodiles.  A few of the residents have made appearance in movies, television shows.  The 54 year old park combines a petting zoo, bird sanctuary, eco tour and outdoor entertainment including daily alligator wrestling.

The International Trolley and Train Museum feature 14s 14 model railroad trains with sound and lighting traveling through an indoor garden with 12 foot high mountains, water falls, and more than 30 trestles and tunnels.  Toy trains from the 1920’s to the present are also featured.

The Kennedy Space Center offers tours of launch areas; see giant rockets, “train” in spaceflight simulators and much more.

Orlando is home to the Orlando Magic, an NBA pro basketball franchise.  Orlando also received an expansion franchise in the American Basket ball Association for the 2006-07 seasons, the Orlando Aces.

In the 1990’s Orlando saw its fist big league regular season game in any sport when the Orlando Arena hosted a contest between the Florida Panthers and the Tamps Bay Lightning.

The Citrus Bowl hosted soccer games for the FIFA World Cup in 1994 and the 1996 Summer Olympics.  Since 2005, Orlando has hosted the PSP World Cup, the largest paintball tournament on the planet.
