The general area along Long Bay was inhabited by the Wacqmaw Indians, prior to European arrivals. Burial and shell mounds are evidence of their civilization.
In the 17th century settlers came to the area but records from this period are sparse with most of the recorded history pieced together from old land grant records. Prior to the American Revolution the land was mostly uninhabited until several families received land grants along the coast. The coast’s soil is sandy and most crops yield of indigo and tobacco were of inferior quality.
The area remained largely unmarked and unsettled. The primary family, the Withers family left the area after the hurricane in 1822 swept over the family home and drowned 18 people in side. The area was left unattended and returned to forest.
Following the Civil War most of the abandoned land was purchased by the Conway Lumber Company and a railroad was built to serve the company. Employees of the lumber and railroad company would take train flatcars down to the beach on the weekends and became the first Grand Strand tourists. In 1900 a hotel, the Seaside Inn was built to handle visitors from the railroad.
Myrtle Beach was named in a contest to name the new area of town. It is derived from the name of the local abundant shrub. The current route of U.S. 501 was created in a more direct path and the new 4 land highway was built in the 1960’s to accommodate increasing traffic into the city. A bypass for US 17 was constructed in and opened in 1975 allowing traffic to bypass the heavily congested areas. New roads have been created in the last 10 years to relieve this congestion as well. The Ocean Forest Hotel was a very grand 300 room hotel with crystal chandeliers, ballroom, indoor and outdoor pools, stables and shops. Next to this was an open to the stars ballroom with big bands to entertain. This was called the Patio and sold no liquor. It was BYOB (bring your own bottle) and you had to pay for “set-ups”, a bucket of ice ($1.00) and ginger ale or cola (also $1.00) Everyone in Myrtle Beach gathered at the Ocean Forest until it was demolished in 1974.
The Patricia Hotel just to the south was listed as a “family resort”. Motels were just being built along the highways when the first “nice” big motel, the El Rancho was built in 1948. The city became concerned as big motels were springing up how the city could support them all.

The most famous event in town is the Sun Fun Festival. Life Magazine covered the first annual event and everyone was required to wear shorts on that day. The populace and visitors had great fun seeing older prominent residents either wearing shorts or hauled off the kangaroo court to jail and to be fined to benefit the building fund for Ocean View Memorial Hospital.
