Los Angeles is the most inhabited city in California. The 2010 United States Census Bureau has enlisted almost 3,800,000 people who are residing in the city. The nicknames that the city has been adopting include simply LA or City of Angels. The former is the abbreviation of the city name and the other is the English translation of its name which is in Spanish language. Both the people and the languages spoken in LA are definitely diverse. The residents are a mixture of White and Black Americans, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and other races. They are all regarded as Angeleños.
The city has been graded as the third richest city in the United States, next to New York. It has been a focal point for global business, entertainment, culture, media, fashion, science, technology and education. It is not only rich but powerful as well. Los Angeles is the world’s third biggest economic center following Greater Tokyo Area and New York metropolis. The city has been deemed as the Entertainment Capital of the World as it houses Hollywood. It is the world center of motion pictures, video games; television shows production and music production. This is the primary reason why the city has also been a home to many actors. In addition, it has hosted some of the biggest sports events in the world, the Summer Olympics which was held twice, the first in1932 and the second in 1984. In 1994, the city hosted the FIFA World Cup.
The prominent landmarks in the area include the Hollywood Sign and the Capital Records Building or Tower which is a thirteen-story building that is a home for recording studios. It lies in the Hollywood Boulevard Commercial and Entertainment District. It is listed as a historic site as it was completed in 1955. It is standing until today. The unique thing about this tower is that it resembles a stack of turntables. There are lights at the top of the tower that spells Hollywood in Morse code. This is to cunningly advertise that it is the first record label based on West Coast. On the albums of their music artists, you will see their claim to be the “Sound Capital of the World’ The lights spelled “Capitol50” in 1994 to pay tribute to the golden anniversary of the company but it has now turned back to spelling the word Hollywood. Other tourist spot includes Randy’s Donuts, where one can see the statue of a giant donut, Los Angeles City Hall, Theme Building, Watts Tower and many more.
LA has gained an alpha world city status just like Chicago due to the constantly high Gross Domestic Product (GDP) that it brings about. It was a financial hub until mid 1990s but the closing and merging of some banks has hardly affected its economy as it still has a wide base of financial system with different industries such as health care, petroleum, manufacturing, tourism, aerospace and many others. It has been a home for some firms listed in Forbes 500 including Northrop Grumman which is an aerospace contractor, health care provider Health Net, AECOM which is an engineering company, energy firm Occidental Petroleum and builder Tutor Perini. It was believed the first settlers stayed in Los Angeles Pueblo Plaza district and Olvera Street. This is why this district is considered as the oldest part of the city, drawing the interest of millions of visitors every year. Most of the eateries in the metropolis are owned by either celebrities or chefs turned into a personality. For example, the famous chef Gordon Ramsay owns a bistro at the heart of the city particularly in the London West Hollywood. His business establishment offers not just fine dining but more than 300 kinds of wine as well. Renowned actress Eva Longoria-Parker is also a restaurant proprietor. She owns Beso that offers American-Latin cuisines over the globe’s best tequilas and lets the diners enjoy a live entertainment.
Getting tanned in the beaches of California is another activity that has been a part of the lives of Los Angeleños. There are certain parts of the city that are in close proximity to Pacific Ocean. There are beaches where domestic and foreign visitors can surf all they want as long as they can. The weather in the city, which is usually mild and humid all year round, is also one thing that draws the attention of the visitors. The average temperature only ranges from 50 to 80, allowing the dwellers to enjoy the surrounding beaches. It is unsurprising that people all over the world wants to live or even stay in Los Angeles even for just a vacation.
