The Pocono Regions represents more than 2500 square miles.  This is twice the size of ‘Rhode Island.  There are few metropolitan areas.  Small cities and small towns are sparsely scattered in a landscape that is mostly rural.  Tourists romantically guide visitors through back roads to find that great restaurant “nestled in the word in the heart of the Poconos” this translates to “the middle of nowhere”.  While there is a lot of “nowhere” many metropolitan areas are a short drive away.  The mythical “heart of the Poconos”, a vaguely defined spot is thought to be Stroudsburg about 75 miles from New York city and 85 miles form Philadelphia.  This proximity to cities and the natural beauty are the primary reasons for the development of the primary industry in the area.  That industry is tourism.  Gross revenues from resorts, restaurants and attraction total more than $1.5 billion annually and more than 18,000 people are employed in these businesses.

Throughout the 20th century the Poconos area has depended on visitors for survival.  The mining, lumbering, ice harvesting, farming and tanning were main industries doomed by refrigeration.  There are a number of factories and industrial parks scattered though the area but the revenues generated are relatively minor.

There is little available property available for industrial growth.  The main highway through the area is US Highway 209 which is controlled by the Delaware Water Gap national Recreation Area and governed by the National park Service.

According to the Insider’s Guide until the mid 1990’s there were no fast food restaurants and only one large supermarket.  Since that time the region has experienced phenomenal growth mostly because vacationers from the New York City Region are turning vacation homes into permanent residences.  The Poconos now serves as a commuter community for the Northern New Jersey metropolitan area, even though the commute often takes as mochas 2 hours each way.
The Poconos might seem to be an extension of the Appalachian Mountains but they are not geologically related.  The Poconos are not a mountain chain but an uplifted region that eroded into sharp relief.  The Delaware River and some 150 lakes and many waterfalls create the splendid natural reserve drawing big city dwellers to enjoy a mostly unspoiled landscape.  The most beautiful of these is the view from Mount Pocono.

In the 20th century the Philadelphia Quakers created the resorts of Buck Hill Falls and Pocono Manor.  Later the Skytop Lodge drew visitors to the primary attractions centered on the region’s diverse natural offerings.  The Delaware Stare Forest includes six designated natural area, seven state parks, game lands and The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.  Lakes stocked for fishing, white tailed deer, wild turkeys, ruffled grouse, and other animals draw fishermen and hunters from all around.  More American Black Bear are killed here than anywhere else in the contiguous 48 states.

The acidic pine barren creek valleys are teeming with trout and berries.  Toward the south, the Blue Mountain ridge is the site of the Appalachian Trail and a major flyway for raptor migration.

Summer camps offer escapes to nature fro the local city youth.  But the Poconos draw visitors to popular summer attractions including the Claws and Paws Wild Animal Park, Kittatinny Rafting and Paintball, the Houdini Museum.  The Pocono Raceway, a major auto race track is home to two NASCAR races in June and August.  There is also a racing school and motorcycle track.

Approval was granted for a gambling casino with slot machines at the site of the former Mount Airy Lodge.  The casino, which opened in October, 2007 will soon be joined by the hotel in November or December.

Ski resorts in the Poconos offer some of the closest and most accessible skiing to the major population centers of the East Coast.  The ski areas are not large and do not have large vertical drops.  However, they do offer the most conveniently located and many areas also offer night skiing.  Resorts such as the one at Shawnee Mountains offer beginner friendly slopes and have recently spent more than $2 million to improve the facility and to improve the snow making equipment and water storage.

For those who enjoy the mountain trails and water activities but long for a bit of pampering there are countless bed and breakfasts and luxurious resorts for a romantic retreat or simply to catch up on a little rest and relaxation.  The heritage of Pennsylvania is evident in this area with museums and tours that bring the unique history of Northeast Pennsylvania to life.

The Delaware Water Gap was once the destination of choice in the Poconos due to the availability of rail service.  However as the highway system grew and the automobile made other areas more accessible Delaware Water Gap went from major destination to quiet community.  The town’s old wooden hotels have burned down or were converted to other uses.  The magnificent rain station has been abandoned.

Delaware Water Gap today is a haven for artists who draw inspiration form the scenery, the Victorian architecture, the small town community spirit and rich history.

The Main Street business district is dominated by craft shops and boutiques and local artists display works at the Anoine Sutot Schoolhouse gallery.  Famous jazz musicians living in the area perform at the Deerhead Inn.  Each year in early September the Delaware Water Gap Celebration of the Arts is held on Main Street across from Deerhead Inn. Artists, performers and area chef’s come to gather for this festival.

Stroudsburg was settled 1730 with the construction of a log house.  In addition to the Pocono Medical Center the town is also h home to East Stroudsburg University one of the 14 universities in the Pennsylvania State System of High Education.

Behind the glitz and glamour of the high dollar resorts lies a struggle.  The entire Pocono Mountains region is faced with the problem of handling two distinct population groups with different concerns.  The general profile is as follows:  Second home owners usually are more affluent than regional primary home owner.  They care more about the environment that the job opportunities.  The popularity of the Poconos as a second home spot created the demand for planned residential developments.  One of the oldest and larges is Hemlock Farms.  These communities provide the amenities that people coming from suburbs of major metropolitan area expect.  This is a boon for visitors and helps to continue the draw of the Poconos as a Honeymoon capital.
