There were boom years after the Civil War when winter weary northerners flocked to the hard white beach.  The railroads came and then a bridge across the Halifax River.  The Ormond Hotel opened in 1888.  In 1890 the Hotel was expanded to accommodate 600 guests.  It was the first in a series of Gilded Age hotels and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places until it was razed in 1992.

John D Rockefeller arrived in 1914 and stayed four seasons at the hotel.  He later bought an estate called the Casements which would be his winter home for the rest of his life.  It was sold by his heirs in 1939 and purchased by the city in 1973.  It now serves as a cultural center and is one of the community’s best known historical buildings.  Automobile races on the hard sand beach between Ormond and Daytona Beach began in 1902.  On these beaches Olds and Winton tested automotive inventions and when the American Automobile Association brought in timing equipment in 1903 the area acquired the nickname “The Birthplace of Speed”
