When someone thinks of Las Vegas "the Strip" is often the image that comes to mind.    The Strip, a 4 mile stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard South, only partially inside the city limits.  After dark it is bright and glittering with casinos and hotels that feature every sort if entertainment. The hotels and casinos offer lavish accommodations and elaborate furnishings and food service to dazzle and delight the senses.

The most commanding water feature is the Bellagio Fountains world famous display of carefully choreographed water movement set to classical, whimsical and opera music.  It is a breathtaking display of water, music and lights. This free attraction at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino operates weekdays every 30 minutes from 3 pm to 8 pm., Saturday, Sunday and Holidays every 30 minutes from noon to 8 pm.  The Adventure Dome in the Circus Circus Hotel is a large indoor theme park.  The AdventureDome has 5 acres under glass and was named the "Best Family Attraction" in a 2001 reader's poll in Las Vegas Review.  There are many attractions that are Kid friendly including, but not limited to, the Star Trek Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton to the White Tiger Habitat in the Mirage.

The area has much to offer in addition to gambling and shows.  The weather is desert hot but average temperature of 66.3 degrees.  More than 965 cabs service the metropolitan area and there are 323 Limousines available.  16 bus and/or charter firms and the Citizens Area Trans (CAT) public transportation all ad excellent accessibility to the long list of amenities.  There are many opportunities for a break from the casinos or for those visitors who do not wish to gamble.  There are 30 gold courses, 8 bowling centers and swimming pools at all of the major hotels and motels.  The Wet n' Wild water park has surfing, swimming, rafting, and water slides.  Family amusement centers including Scandia, Funtasia and Mountasia feature miniature golf, go-carts, Grand Prix cars, roller-skating, batting cages, bumper cars, and virtual reality. There is an Ice skating rink at Santa Fe Hotel/Casino

The Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum, the Guinness World of Records Museum, Las Vegas Art Museum, Las Vegas Museum of Natural History, Liberace Museum Foundation, Lied Discovery Children's Museum, Nevada State Museum and Historical Society, Lost City Museum of Archaeology. Clark County Heritage Museum, Nevada State museum and Historical Society, Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History/UNLV. Debbie Reynolds Hollywood Movie Museum offer a wide spectrum of interest with something for almost any visitor with an interest in history, the arts, or the unusual.

Those who have interest in the influence of technology on the environment can spend a fact-finding day at Hoover Dam only 30 miles to the southeast.  Hoover Dam, in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River created Lake Mead, a popular water recreation area.
 The contractors were allowed seven years for the construction of the dam, power plant, and appurtenant works. But everything was completed in five years. (Aril 20, 19312 to March 1, 1936) Nearly 21,000 men work on the Dam with an average of 3,500 daily.  The average monthly payroll was $500,000. 

Boulder city was first built to house both government and contractor employees in addition they built seven miles of 22 foot wide asphalt surfaced highway from boulder City to the Dam site; 22.7 miles of standard-gauge railroad form the Union Pacific main line in Las Vegas to Boulder City and an additional 10 miles from Boulder City to the Dam site; and a 222 mile long power transmission line from San Bernardino, California to the Dam site to supply energy for construction.  The Dam had an immediate "largeness and wonder" and a big impact on the economy as well.

Lake Mead is a by-product of the Dam and power plant.  Recreation constitutes a major use of the Lake.  Lake Mead is one of America's most popular water recreation areas.  The climate permits 12-month use of the water and nearly 9 million visitors each year come to the Lake for swimming, boating, skiing, and fishing.  The National Park Service as part of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area administers the lake and surrounding areas.

Mt. Charleston is 35 miles from Las Vegas. It rises to an elevation of 11,918 feet and there is facility for winter skiing as well as picnicking, hiking, horseback riding.

Bonnie Springs, an old western town in Red Rock Canyon is 16 miles form Las Vegas with a motel, shops, activities and western shootouts.  Red Rock Canyon is a thrust created 3,000-foot escarpment containing desert and scenic rock formations.

Death Valley, 135 miles for Las Vegas is only 40 minutes by plane.  It is the lowest elevation on the North American Continent at 280 feet below sea level there are tours available to Zabiske point, 20 Mule Canyon and Scotty's Castle.

The Ethel M Chocolate Factory featured self-guided tours for the factory and outside botanical garden with cactus display.   There are many other factory tours from coffee to cigars to milk.  These behind the scenes factories often include add extras freebies, even free chocolate.

Valley of Fire State Park is 55 miles from Las Vegas and is renowned for landscapes of hidden canyons and unique rock formations, petroglyphs and ruins of an ancient Indian civilization. 

Grand Canyon, about 300 miles, 1 1/2 hours by plane is, of course, the most magnificent work and wonder in our nation.

The 3.2 million square foot Las Vegas Convention Center features approximately 2 million square feet of exhibit space and 380,000 square fee of net meeting room space, accommodating 170 meeting rooms with seating capacities from 20 to 7500.

The Allied Arts Council, Las Vegas Symphony Orchestra, Nevada School of the Arts, Reed Whipple Cultural Center, Las Vegas Little Theatre, Rainbow Company a children's theater provide diversion and culture

The Hotels all offer gift shops and downtown Las Vegas has numerous shopping outlets.  Primm is home to Fashion Outlets Las Vegas.  This shopping utopia features over 100 designer store discount outlets including the likes of BCBG, Banana Republic, Cole Haan, Reebok, Fossil, Gap, and Polo ?Ralph Lauren, plus plenty of eateries, home furnishing stores and gift shops.  This town also features major casino's, Whiskey Pete's, Primadonna and Buffalo Bill.  The three resorts a linked by monorail. Primm is the last change for motorists to gamble in Nevada.

Downtown, on Freemont Street there is a party atmosphere with the Real Action Stunt Stage offering highflying acrobats who thrill and amaze every night for free.  Thursday through Saturday Riders of the Thunderdome daredevils defy death as they enter the Globe of Death.  There are free concerts, restaurants, and lounges all under the big dome.  Go to Freemont Street to experience "over the top vintage Vegas".

Main Street Station, "The Jewel of Downtown" is located at the far northwest corner of downtown, in the Main Street Station you can view a display of fabulous collection of antiques that reflect the wonderful old rich looking dark woods with dominate the Victorian themed interiors.  Take your own self-guided tour to see stained glass from the Lillian Russell Mansion, bronze doors and facade from Kuwait Royal Bank, and a portion of the Berlin Wall.

For luck, drop by the California Hotel's Buddha whose belly is well worn by luck seekers.   The neon museum housing old Las Vegas signs from the old Hacienda Horse and Rider, Aladdin's Lamp   refurbished and on display.  The Golden Nugget, the most upscale hotel/casino in downtown It houses the world largest nugget at 61 pounds 11 ounces.  The Golden Gate opened as the Hotel Nevada in 1906.  It is most famous for its shrimp cocktail priced at 99 cents.

From humble beginnings as a tiny stop on the Union Pacific line between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City Las Vegas has brown into a vast pleasure dome.  Its dedication to entertainment and the party atmosphere has not diminished and there are far too many attractions to list. There are many projects working to widen the Las Vegas experience and create more family friendly packages.
