You might take a look at Anaheim, Ca, the city that a mouse put on the map!  Visitors from all around the world make the journey to Anaheim for the Disneyland experience and while the Disney Resort and theme park is a vital part of Anaheim’s attraction the city has a rich history and much to offer for everyone.  Today, Anaheim is growing into her city slogan, “It’s so California”!

Located just 28 miles southeast of Los Angeles Anaheim was founded by fifty German families in 1857.  The city grew into an industrial center producing electronics, aircraft parts, and canned fruit before the opening of the Disneyland Resorts in 1955.  Anaheim also boasts Angel Stadium, Honda Center, and the Anaheim convention Center, the largest convention center on the American West Coast.  The city name is derived from “Ana”, after the Santa Ana River and “heim”, a common  upper region German word for “home”.

Anaheim covers the largest land area of all California cities, stretching across Orange County to San Bernardino county.  It  encompasses a span of diverse neighborhoods and communities such as the master planned Anaheim Hills.  The West Anaheim area has more mature neighborhoods that are a part of the expanding suburban sprawl extending outward from Los Angeles. Disneyland is included in the Anaheim Resort area while the Platinum Triangle surrounds the Angel Stadium complex.

The original settlers were grape farmers and wine makers from Bavaria and began the wine industry on 1.165 acres.  Unfortunately the grape industry was destroyed in the 1880’s by an insect pest but walnuts, lemons and oranges soon filled the void.  The vast expanses of meticulously groomed orchards are a welcome sight for those seeking a closer communion with nature.  There is little to compare for total relaxation than the beauty of cultivated land.  Although agriculture is not a high profile industry, it contributes more that $300 million to the local economy.  The farmers of Orange County maintain tracts of open space, plant trees and crops that help improve air quality, provide a sumptuous harvest of locally grown products and help protect the ambience of old Orange County.  A brief trip to Centennial Farm at the Orange County Fairgrounds will bring city dwellers to a four acre demonstration farm boasting exotic fruit trees, gourd vines, and a variety of farm animals such as cattle, sheep, pigs goats, rabbits, horses, and llamas.  Yokes of oxen pull farm implements and wagons. The farm also offers hands on learning for area school children from gathering eggs to feeding cows.
Tananka Farms offers tours throughout the growing seasons of organic strawberries, tomatoes, watermelons and pumpkins.  The one-hour tour includes tractor pulled tour of the fields and the u-pick circle garden.  Children especially enjoy driving past the fields of watermelons and being invited to pick one.  Everyone enjoys the wonderful melons served at the tour’s end.

Knott’s Berry Farm is the most famous and well known.  Daily tours(everyday including Christmas) begin at 9:15 am and there is hotel pick up from designated Anaheim area hotels  Knott’s Berry Farm was once an actual berry farm but now 160 acres of world class rides, unique family shows and one of a kind attractions including GhostRider, the world’s best wooden roller coaster, Camp Snoopy and Gold Rush camp where you can actually pan for gold.  World-class artisans including blacksmiths, woodcarvers, a spinner and storytellers bring the ghost town area to life.  The famous Boysenberry, a combination of red raspberry, blackberry and loganberry was developed there and were for sale in a roadside stand in the 1930’s.  The Knott family also began selling fried chicken dinners  with the trademark boysenberry pie for desert.  As Orange County developed the restaurant location was a popular stopping place for drivers making the then two-hour trip from Los Angeles and the Orange county beaches.  In 1968 the Knott family fenced the farms and  started charging admission.  It officially became and amusement park.

In contrast to the early rustic days the vicinity of the park is now heavily suburbanized and some visitors to the park may perceive the phrase “berry farm” as a misnomer.  It has expanded now to more theme park than farm but the gifts shops still sell the wonderful boysenberry products along with food gift packs featuring a wide variety of jams and jellies.

Other splendid attractions available from Anaheim are the wonderful beaches.  More than 200 tours are available from Anaheim.  There are cruises to Seal Rocks to observe colonies of sea lions, called the “showmen of the sea” and off shore destinations for many species of dolphins.  There are snorkeling trips to beautiful underwater gardens aboard a high-speed pontoon boat (no experience necessary). On water luxury tours and tour bus travels to the spectacular canyons, scenic coastline, unspoiled countryside alive with native plants, and wildlife.  Buffalo, deer, turkey wild boars, balk eagles or foxes on beautiful Catalina Island.  This is the Catalina seldom seen by most visitors.

There are 42 miles of beautiful coastline reflecting an active California lifestyle filled with an abundance of beach recreation, from volleyball and surfing to kayaking and sailing.    beautiful Catalina Island to Huntington Beach where main street meets the Pacific Coast Highway.  Newport Beach is the model for the setting of the popular television show The O.C.  The city is filled with miles of sandy beaches and multi million dollar homes along the boardwalk on Balboa Island.  This sophisticated beach city also offers upscale shopping at Fashion Island, a diverse menu of award winning restaurants and a stylish ultra lounge.  Dana Point features a beautiful manmade harbor and Mariners Village where friendly merchants and local restaurateurs give a warm welcome to visitors  Dana Point hosts the Toshiba Tall Ships Festival, the Dhoeny Blues Festival and the Festival of Whales.

Drive or take the train into San Clemente, the charming “Spanish Village by the Sea.  Shop for antiques, custom jewelry, designer perfumes and unique gifts along the quaint streets.

Anaheim is not all beaches, farms and theme parks.  She boasts the world renowned Anaheim Ballet.  Students of ballet receive training that gives the positive effects of higher self esteem, improved posture, development of talent, stress reduction, self expression, physical conditioning and the pure joy of movement.  Some students go on to professional dance careers; ballet is the foundation dance form for the school as it enables dancers to achieve more in any dance form that they may pursue.  The Ballet offers performances in the OC Pavilion.  This year they will perform “The Nutcracker”

The NHL Anaheim Ducks, 2007 Stanley Cup Champions, The MLB  Los Angeles Angels, 2002 world Series champions bring sports fans from far and wide.

No essay on Anaheim would be complete without acknowledging the contribution of the Disney Resorts and Disneyland.  Disneyland Park, the “happiest place on earth” opened in 1955 and defined the standard for family recreation.  An evolving 85 acre experience in classic Disney storytelling featuring more than 60 attractions it began the trend for tourism that is the big money industry in Anaheim and Orange County.  Made popular through the Walt Disney television program and known for its clean and culturally, ethnically diverse atmosphere the Resort and theme parks attract millions of visitors and billions of dollars into Anaheim and Orange county.  No matter that there are Disney theme parks in other locales; this is the jewel in the crown.

Autumn in Orange County is the perfect time to experience outdoor dining, sporting events, warm beaches and countless Fall festivities.  Whether bringing the family to an exciting fall event or escaping on a long weekend getaway, fall is the season to “fall for Orange County” and see the colors from the sapphire blue waters of the Pacific Ocean, glowing golden sunsets, white chocolate martinis and even red-hot dining.  No matter what season you are there or what you love best Anaheim is the must do location for relaxation and fun.
